One of Those Proud Dad Moments
A few weekends ago we took a quick trip down to St. George with Abbey’s family. Lately, we've had more chances to break our routine. I've noticed how our kids behave when we're out of our element. And I have to say, I’ve been incredibly proud and honestly kind of blown away by our four-year-old son, Beau.
There was one night during the trip that felt like one of those small but unforgettable parenting “paydays.” We were at dinner with the whole group, and Beau ended up sitting a few seats away from us but far enough that we couldn’t really jump in to help him if he needed anything. But he didn’t need anything. On his own, he ordered his food, sat quietly, and ate everything over his plate without spilling. just like we’ve been practicing at home the last few weeks.
Our kids are usually pretty good in public, but this just hit different. Watching him show that kind of maturity and self-control was one of those moments where you see real growth happening right in front of you. I couldn’t help but feel like the things were teaching were landing.
Another highlight from the trip: getting to play pickleball with Beau after we spent the day at Southern Shores with the Cutlers. Pickleball with Beau has become one of my favorite things. He’s starting to really figure it out. For the first time, we could hit the ball back and forth several times in a row. It was a blast. Seeing him light up when we get a good rally going. there’s nothing better. He’s got the cutest little personality, and he’s honestly one of the most obedient kids I’ve ever been around.
One night after all the activities, it hit me again while we were in the car. We were doing our usual debrief with the kids, talking through the day, and checking in. and I just had this wave of gratitude settle in. Then later, when Beau and I ran to the gas station, it hit me again. He loves coming to the gas station with me because I let him pick out a treat. He thinks it’s the greatest thing in the world. And on that short drive, I just felt overwhelmed with love for this little boy who’s learning and growing and putting so many of the things we’re teaching him into practice.
Beau, if you ever read this one day when you're older, I hope you know how much I love you. How proud I am of you. You’re special. You’ve got so many gifts. Keep working hard and keep dreaming big. I believe in you, and I always will.
